i remote worker , have vpn access windows file server share. seems everywhere read recommendation use web server based repository. tough sell me because don't know real advantages weigh against cost of maintaining web server whether windows or linux based.
there 2 people accessing @ time , neither need access outside vpn or main office. someday maybe more. not in foresable future.
i'd add 2 cents - publishingrepositories page linked martin says following server shares:
generally restricted intranets, not recommended due general issues network filesystem reliability
from own experience, putting hg repositories on server shares works on windows long clients and server windows machines.
i had problems @ home windows clients trying access hg repositories on nas running on linux.
at work, used hg repositories on share on "real" windows server on 3 years without single problem.
in meantime, switched hgweb - had move new server anyway, decided give hgweb shot , managed run on new server, this tutorial.
i can confirm hgweb seems faster (like eldad said) , agree martin's statement being able view history in browser.
however, both these advantages nice, live without them.
if shared drive works you, keep it.
imo, installing hgweb not easy eldad says in answer (at least wasn't easy me on windows server. on other hand, know absolutely nothing web servers , iis...maybe have been easier knowledge).
